Stalins biggest fear was being overthrown, and to help curb those fears he formed a secret police known as NKVD. Old heroes of the revolution or anyone with popular support were charged with treason, and 1 in every 5 officers of the army were executed. Many people were often put on trials known as "show trials" and they were forced under duress to admit to something they didn't do.
