Mussolini And The Rise Of Fascism
Mussolini formed the Fascist government in Italy in 1923, he also was a big supporter of hitler throughout the 30's. He supported the Fascist government in Spain during the Spanish civil war, and in 1939 he join in alliance with Hitler. He used the Blackshirts as a paramilitary force, and was the complete opposite of Communism. He came into power after the March of Rome. The Fascist government believed in censorship of the media, imperialism, the were very Nationalistic, they encouraged private ownership, and they were a non-democratic, militaristic government. They were also a totalitarian government, meaning that Mussolini answered to no one but himself. Later, Il Duche came into power through Acerbo Law, which was created to give mussolini the majority of seats in the Chamber of Deputies automatically. Socialist leader Giacomo Matteotti was murdered in public for speaking out against the Fascists, and by 1926 all anti Fascist parties were eliminated, and the freedom of press, speech, and assembly were eliminated. The Catholic church was the most powerful remaining body in Italy. Fearing Mussolini's wrath, Pope Pius XI signed an agreement known as the "Devils Deal." This deal gave the church complete power over religion in schools, the right for the pope to rule his own state, and recognition as the state religion. In return Mussolini got recognition as the legitimate church leader.
